Nepali Students Hooked on Tobacco: Study Reveals Alarming Trend
A recent study by the Nepal Health Research Council reveals a concerning trend: 18% of students aged 13-15 in Nepal are using tobacco products. The 'Global Youth Tobacco Survey Nepal-2025' highlights the rising popularity of newer forms of tobacco like e-cigarettes and hookah among students. While traditional cigarette use has slightly decreased since 2011, the overall tobacco consumption by students is increasing due to these new products. Peer pressure, curiosity, and the perception of reduced harm are major factors influencing this trend. The study emphasizes the need for stricter enforcement of tobacco control laws, banning sales to minors, and regulating the marketing of new tobacco products to protect school-aged children.
